'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Scentsy warmers were glowin' for me and my spouse.
The waxes were wafting their scent through the air
Huckleberry Sage could be smelled everywhere.
The children were nestled all snug in their bed,
with BOGO Scentsy Buddies tucked next to their head.
And daddy in his jammies, and I in my cap
had just settled down for a long winter's nap

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I smelled something stinky, what kind didn’t matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash
and gave Santa some Layers in a mad dash.
Just what he needed to finish his show,
he responded with a hearty “Ho ho ho!”
“I need more Scents, please bring some right here!
And Scentsy Buddies to help my eight tiny reindeer.”

I packed a Scentsy gift bag; I did it real quick.
I wanted to please good old St. Nick
I gave him samples ‘cause that’s part of my game
and quickly I called out the scents by name.
“Welcome Home, Sugar Cookie, and Enchanted Mist,
Cinnamon Bear, Clean Breeze, and Citrus Sunkissed.”
I jumped out of my bed and ran into the hall,
taking him Autumn Sunset, the smell of fall.

Santa smelled Scentsy and I heard a big sigh,
“Mrs. Claus would love this, my, oh, my!”
So I got out my testers; he sniffed quite a few;
and I showed him the warmers and plug-ins, too.
When Santa sneezed, I thought I made a big goof.
But he’d sniffed some soot coming in off the roof.
Then in my kit some French Lavender I found,
when Santa smelled that, I heard a sighing sound

I loaded him with Scentsy, from head to toe,
and basket tester kits for the elves so they know.
“I’ll put this in my sleigh and be right back!”
Then I gave him more Scentsy to fill up his sack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples how merry,
when he saw the warmer Merry Berry.
Then he smiled and, like my warmers, did glow.
About the hostess plan he wanted to know.

He took the scent circles tied to my wreath,
and stuck a few travel tins in between his teeth.
As he was leaving he shouted “Whoa, Nelly!”
Do you have a scent that smells like grape jelly?
He was quite Scentsified that jolly old elf—
Santa shouted, “I’ll keep some of this myself!”
I crept back up the stairs and into my bed.
With no Scentsy left, tomorrow I would dread.

But the warehouse crew would soon be back to work.
I’ll re-order tomorrow, hostess reward’s are such a perk!
As I drifted off into a sweet sleep,
Dreaming of Scentsy, it's insfused in my sheets.
I heard Santa Claus to his team give a whistle,
and away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he flew out of sight,
"Scentsational Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Update on Beauty Box Subscriptions

I thought I should update everyone as it has been a while since I've posted anything about my beauty box subscriptions.

I had been subscribed to Glymm, Topbox and Julep Maven and most recently signed up for Glossybox, however, as of last month, I am no longer subscribed to any of these beauty boxes.

You might be wondering why?

Well, first, I was getting way too many samples to keep up with using them all in a timely manner.  Second, it seemed that I was receiving a lot of duplicate products from each of the subscriptions and third, the prices of most of the subscriptions was increasing.  Now $1 - $2 isn't much but some like Glossybox have increased to $21/month .... WAY too much in my opinion!!

So for now, I am taking a break from all beauty subscriptions.

Scentsy Candles vs Wicked Candles

If you don’t already know, Scentsy offers Wickless Scented Candles and Electric Warmers and are sold through Independent Scentsy Consultants via Home, Basket parties and Online orders.

The official Wikipedia description of a “Candle” is: A candle is a solid block of fuel (commonly wax) and an embedded wick, which is lit to provide light, and sometimes heat. While this is the most commonly known description for a ‘candle’, there are many others on the market right now who’ve created a safer, flameless version. The most well known Candles are Yankee Candles, PartyLite, Gold Canyon, Glade and Bath & Body Works.

Before Scentsy, I purchased candles from all of these…in addition to others - mostly I kept Bath & Body Works in business.  I rarely use wicked candles any longer but do keep a small supply handy in case of a power outage. Truly, that is the only thing that wicked candles are useful for in my opinion.

Yes, wicked candles can be put most anywhere, come in scented and un-scented varieties, create an ambiance or sets a mood with the flickering of the flame and, they don’t require electricity to work. I don’t deny that we were candle fanatics. We loved giving candles to our friends and every time I saw a candle, even at WalMart, that was pretty or smelled good – I’d buy it. I know that I’ve personally spent thousands of dollars on them over the years. I love the way Wicked Candles look and smell. However, here’s the rub: They only smell up your home when they are lit!

There are other types of wickless candles: I’ve had tart burners – similar to Scentsy but the wax is heated and it evaporates. Potpourri – it gets dusty and only smells if you stick your nose up to it. We even had one of those little electric crock pots where you put in vanilla extract. There’s always the ever popular scent infused reeds. We’ve tried these a few times as we received them as gifts and they really don’t do anything but look nice.

Did you know?
Get this: Until I started using Scentsy it never occurred to me to think – where does the candle wax go? I mean, you light a candle, the wax melts and the scent escapes too. The wick is being burnt too. Where does it all go? What are we breathing in? My husband has allergies - I think I do too. This couldn’t be good for any of us right? Have you ever thought of this?

With Scentsy, the wax never evaporates. The warmers do just that – the warmers ‘warm’ the wax, allowing the scent to evaporate but the wax stays in the top of the warmer. When the wax no longer has any scent, you can either pour it into the garbage or, when it cools, you can pop it out and toss it. If you want to change scents, you can even pour your still scented wax back into their containers to re-mold and pop in a different cube of wax – we do this all the time which gives us a lot of flexibility with our scent moods!

Some people love candles that offer aromatherapy. Scents can put you in a mood be it happy, sad, thoughtful, romantic, etc. Some scents like peppermint have been known to help sharpen the brain while lavender is relaxing and soothing.

Why Scentsy?
Scentsy is the main reason we stopped using wicked candles. Not only are they more fragrant and safer than all the other candles I’ve ever used (yes, I mean ever) but, they smell up my home 24/7. The other reason we stopped using wicked candles is because of the fire hazard.  How many times did I leave my house and then had to head back because I forgot to blow out the candle? I’ve ruined a carpet before due to burning a triple wicked candled too long. The candle didn’t come with any instructions telling me that I could only burn it for 2 hrs or else it would burn unevenly causing one side to fall and creating a stream of wax down the pillar candle, onto a coffee table and onto the carpet… red wax is very hard to remove! I even admit, I've fallen asleep with candles on – so not safe! "

Also, I’ve saved a ton of money using Scentsy. The Scented Candle bars are really cheap and they last longer than my closest favorite candles – Yankee. I can tell you that I cannot even count the number of $20 jars I’ve bought and received over the years…that’s expensive! Especially for something that doesn’t last a full month and that only scented up the room it was in – not the entire house. What I dislike about Yankee Candles is how everytime the wax get’s melted down to the bottom 1/4 of the glass jar the wick gets lost. I have to dig it out with a knife and scrape around it. Then, I can never find our long lighters and I burn my fingers holding the jar sideways or even upside down, trying to light the wick with a match or small lighter. Then, I always get that black soot all over my hand and wrist. Then, when I can’t light the jar any longer I couldn’t use the jar for anything else…I threw it away. How wasteful is that.

We have plug-in warmers in all 3 of our bathrooms and they are also left on 24/7 as nightlights - their small size is perfect to scent the small room!  I only put one cube in these plug-ins and that is plenty for a small space. I change out the warmer in our Living Room based upon the time of year. For the Holidays I have our Gingerbread warmer near our Christmas tree and I also put up the new Holiday Lights warmer in the family room. Both have the newest scent of the month "Huckleberry Sage" warming in them.  Speaking of holidays, Scentsy comes out with new warmers each month, often tied to the most popular holidays.
Scentsy Gingerbread Warmer

Now, you may not agree with me and may still love your wicked candles but I ask you to try a Scentsy Warmer and wax bar and then get back to me and comment below. I’d really love to hear what you think!

Wick Candles Create Unnecessary Fire Hazards

Who doesn’t love a candle?
They are pretty to look at and we use them to decorate our homes; Scented Candles make us happy because they smell great; the flickering of the candle flame is pretty and creates a really nice & relaxing ambiance to any environment; etc. Candles are great when there is a power outage to light up your house. Great Gifts! Everyone has received, at one point or another, a candle as a gift!

Wicked Candle Alternative – Scentsy Wickless Candles!

Scentsy’s Warmers and Plug-in come in over 40 styles/designs, new warmers are introduced monthly and every spring and fall Scentsy rolls out NEW Warmers for the changing seasons. All the warmers are electric powered and have light bulbs with peep holes emitting pools of light or even creating a ‘glow’ on the warmers.

Scentsy has over 80 scents to choose from in collections such Bakery, Romance, Scentsy Man, Cafe’, Spa, etc. Our Scents are warmed from their wax base from our ‘warmers’ creating the most fragrant scent throw you can find! They are safe to touch (warm, not hot), the wax won’t burn you and there is no harmful soot or flames to start a fire. We also have Room Sprays, Car Fresheners, Travel Tins, etc. from all of the scent collections.

U.S. Home Candle Fire Statistics 2002-2005 *Data from the US Fire Association

U.S. fire departments responded to 15,600 home 1 structure fires that were started by candles in 2005. These fires caused
• 150 civilian fire deaths;
• 1,270 civilian fire injuries; and
• $539 million in direct property damage.

Overall, candles caused
• 4% of reported home fires,
• 5% of the home fire deaths,
• 10% of the home fire injuries, and
• 8% of the direct property damage in reported home fires

~  On average, one home candle fire was reported every 34 minutes.
~ More than half of all candle fires started when something that could burn, such as furniture, mattresses or bedding, curtains, or decorations, was too close to the candle.
~ In one-fifth (20%) of the fires, the candles were unattended or abandoned.
~ Almost two-fifths of home candle fires begin in the bedroom, although the candle industry found that only 13% of candle users burn candles in the bedroom most often.

December is the peak time of year for home candle fires.  In December, 13% of home candle fires began with decorations compared to 4% the rest of the year. The top five days for home candle fires were Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Halloween.

Candle Product Recalls In the past few years there have been product recalls on the following:
Yankee Candle – Haunted House Screen tea lights candles 2009. The window panes on the screens could ignite
Swiss Colony – Money Bag Candle 2006. The decorations on the candle can ignite and hot wax can pool out of the candle creating fire hazard
Pier 1 – Silver & Gold Glitter Tea Lights 2010. The flame of the candle can ignite the glitter
Pier 1 – Ceramic Santa Tea Light Holders 2009. The fame can ignite the ceramic candle holder
Walgreens - Five Finger Decorative Novelty Candles for Halloween 2005. These candles generate high flames
Bath & Body Works – 773000 Votive Candles. They were burning with high or irregular flames
Spa at Home – 2nd recall of Gel Candles. Excessive flame heights
IKEA - 133000 packages of outdoor candles 2006. The candles wax can catch fire causing a high flame.

I found tons of recalls on products from companies that I have personally purchased candles from in the past. This isn’t to say that they don’t have safe products in any way (I still have a couple Yankee Candles for power outages) but really, candle fire safety is a serious issue and you should know the risks of using them in your home.

Safety Precautions to use when using Lit Candles **Data from the National Candle Association
A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed three basic safety rules:
• Never leave a burning candle unattended.
• Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.
• Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. No Worries with Scentsy Candles
• With Scentsy Wickless Candles you CAN leave a warmer on, even when you’re not home without fear of the fire.
• You can put a Scentsy Warmer wherever you have an outlet. If the warmer is accidentally tipped over you only have to worry about cleaning up the wax and perhaps getting a new light bulb (if it breaks) or a new warmer if broken from the fall.
• Our kids have them in their rooms as nightlights and they are on 24/7. They aren’t fascinated by the flame of a candle any longer and they aren’t playing with the wax. If they touch they warmer they don’t get burned and if they spill the wax on themselves then really…they just end up smelling good but aren’t burnt!

I wrote this post today because our 6 month old Husky bumped into the Plug-in Warmer we have in the downstairs bathroom (yes he was on the counter!! He's a curious Husky, and in his defense it did smell good!!). It spilled a little wax on the counter and on the outside of the warmer and was very easy to clean up.  In the past I wouldn't think of having a candle lit in the bathroom, but with my Scentsy Plug-In warmer I didn't have to worry about him burning himself or knocking over a flame and starting a fire.

With Scentsy, I just don’t worry about fire safety any longer while still getting all the benefits of having candles and more!  Yes, I still have candles in the house, but as I mentioned, only for emergencies when the power goes out.

Some consultants only work a couple hours a week, and some run their Scentsy business full time. Also, consultants focus on different areas of their business. Some consultants focus on building a strong team by recruiting other consultants, others focus solely on selling Scentsy products and some work on both.

Because of this, there really is no average Scentsy commission check, it depends entirely on how much effort and time you're willing to put into it. Some consultants make 6 figures selling Scentsy, and some make a couple hundred dollars per month. April 2012 Glossybox

I actually received my box yesterday - May 1st ... I'm not sure why, but Glossybox always takes longer to arrive than the other beauty subscription services.  Not that I'm complaining ...

So what was included in this month's Glossybox:

Aveeno - Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer
This amazing moisturizing formula is clinically shown to improve the look of tone, texture, dullness, blotchiness and brown spots.

Wella Brilliance - Condition and Treatment
This lightweight brilliance conditioner moisturizes colored hair, leaving even fine hair full of vibrant shine and free flowing movement; the brilliance treatment with triple blend technology blends three lightweight polymers to instantly restore hair's vibrancy.  Both with diamond dust.

My thoughts?
Although I was disappointed in the first box, it seems Glossybox has redeemed themselves and has started to send samples that are in keeping with the boxes they offer in the other countries.  I am very pleased with this month's box and am pleased to give it a 5 out of 5!!  Watch out Glymm, Topbox and Luxe Box ... you definitely have some competition!!!

♥ nail file (can never have too many)
♥ Base Coat
♥ Helena
♥ Melissa (awesome pearl)
♥ Oscar (I had received one of these in a previous box)
♥ Cuticle Oil (love this - has a roller ball!!)

Overall I am very pleased with my mystery box ... and yes, they will most likely suck me in again on the next one!! LOL

If you ordered a Julep Maven mystery box, what did you get???

April 2012 Glymm Box

If you've been following my blog you know that Glymm is one of my favorite beauty box subscriptions.  I was a bit disappointed in last month's box, but was hopeful Glymm would redeem themselves this month.

So, what did I receive??

Lucia - Soap #1
According to the info card this soap is "packed with pure botanical extracts with 100% certified organic Shea Butter".  The scent I received was Goat Milk and Linseed.  Unfortunately to me, it smells kind of "old ladyish".
Full size: 8 soaps for $17.50
Sample: 1 soap = $2.19

Free Your Mane - Sulfate Free Shampoo & Conditioner
According to the info card, they "gently cleanse hair and scalp while natural oils help rebuild your hair's delicate moisture balance".  I've been using sulfate free shampoo for a couple months now, so am interested to see how this stacks up to my current brand.
Full Size: 300 ml for $16
Sample:  7.4 ml = $1

Mai Couture - Social Gloss
According to the info card "not only will this gloss fill in unwanted lines and restore moisture, but it will create full kissable lips".  The formula is a complex mix of plant extracts that naturally enhance lip volume without the allergen.  The color I received was a beige toned pink ... not sure it will suit me.
Full Size:  5 ml for $28
Sample:  Full Size

Atelier Cologne - Orange Sanguine
Atelier is a niche perfume house in Paris and New York.  And after giving it a sniff, I can say it is a nice fragrance if you like citrus smells.  For me, this was just "meh".
Full Size:  30 ml for $60 or 200 ml for $165
Sample:  Approx. 2 ml  = $4

Nu-Me $100 Gift Certificate
At first glance, I thought "wow" ... but then realized that we received a product from Nu-Me in last month's box - feather hair extensions - which I had no intention of trying/wearing.  A quick look at their website confirmed that they have styling tools (which I do not use), hair extensions (again, which I do not use) and some hair care items which I most likely won't be buying.  So if anyone wants the card/code, just message me and it's yours!

Total value of this month's box (not including the Nu-me gift certificate) = $35

Final thoughts:
Overall I’m not super excited about this box. I’ll use the shampoo, conditioner and probably the soap but unfortunately the samples are not that exciting. As for the full-sized lip gloss, I’m not sure if it’s a good colour for me and will most likely give it away.  I give this box a 2.5 out of 5.

Unfortunately that's been 2 months in a row I've been disappointed in my Glymm Box ... which actually surprises me somewhat.  Hopefully next month's box will be better.

If you'd like to subscribe to Glymm, you can use my referral link.  I get 50 points for everyone who signs up - which can be used for free boxes, or products in their shop.

Until next month ...

April Julep Maven - American Beauty

I can't remember how many Julep Maven boxes I've received so far, but I have to say I love love love getting them in the mail!!

If you're new to Julep Maven, or not sure what exactly it is, you can check out my previous blog posting here -http://bonnyl.blogspot.ca/2012/02/julep-maven.html

What I like about Julep Maven is you actually see what you are getting ahead of time and if for some reason you don't like the offerings for your current month, you can select another box from the choices.  This is what I did this month - switching from my usual "It Girl" to "American Beauty". That's one of the things I love about Julep - you can change your selection, send your month to a friend or even skip a month if there is nothing that appeals to you that month. If only other beauty box subscriptions would be like this!!

What did I receive???  (sorry for the poor pictures - these were taken with my cell phone late at night)

Top to Bottom:
♥ Emma - juicy raspberry cream
♥ Renee - spring lilac cream

Normally I gravitate towards more neutral colors, but after seeing Emma, I just had to order this box ... I fell in love with the bright pink polish the moment I saw it.  Renee is a very nice light lilac and I think these two go very well together.

Looking to become a Julep Maven?? Just click on my referral link and then share your own link with your friends. You'll earn 1 credit for each friend who joins, and 2 credits automatically earns you a free month!

Definitely looking forward to next month's box!! And don't forget to use the code NEW5 at checkout to get your intro Maven box for only $5 if you become a Maven like me!

... until next time ...

Sample Size Received: 7.5mL/$11.59

Total value of this month's Topbox:  $25

Until next month ...

March Glossybox

In February, I received my first Glossybox.  Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed in the offerings (which I attribute to watching videos and reviews of the Glossyboxes received by those in the UK and Australia).  I was hopeful March's Glossybox samples would improve.

My thoughts?
Overall, I am quite pleased with this month's box. The samples were much improved over last month and if Glossybox continues to include samples such as these, I will be more than happy to pay the $15/month!  Looking forward to next months box!!
